Only recently have I had enough creds to buy a III+ ship, and that's only because I sold my current. In my current first playthrough since Ancient Rifts, I've just reached level 23. With that mindset, on most previous playthroughs, I was able to afford at least 2 extra ships in my hangar, both tier III at least. I've done all my playthroughs with the same mindset and that is "a little bit of everything". I believe it is also possible to turn on aim assist using the mouse if I'm not mistaken which may help. The controller has built in aim assist so that may explain why you are having better luck with a controller. I'm sure disabilities bring their own unique set of problems to the control schemes.
